Medical Assessment Unit / Chest Pain Clinic

 

The Medical Assessment unit at St Vincent’s Private Hospital has been developed to provide rapid access to a range of investigations and Consultant opinion for your patients. The aim is to reduce waiting time for patients whose acute symptoms require urgent evaluation but do not necessitate a referral to an Emergency Department.

The MAU is open for referrals from 8am until 3pm Monday-Friday except Bank Holidays.

All patients must be referred by their GP. This service is not available for self-referral by patients.

Which Patients are suitable for the MAU at SVPH?

The Medical Assessment Unit is available for all adult patients who are considered to be a MEDICAL referral and require a period of assessment and diagnostic work up following examination by their GP.

Patients must be

·        non-critical

·        stable and do not require resuscitation or stabilisation

·        eligible for admission, if required following assessment, to St Vincent’s Private Hospital i.e. has Private Health Insurance or the ability to “self pay”.

Which Patients are not suitable for the MAU at SVPH?

The MAU is NOT suitable for patients within the following criteria:

·        Critically unwell patients

·        Haemodynamically unstable

·        Pregnant women

·        Children

·        Acute Mental Illness

·        Trauma

·        A clearly defined condition requiring subspecialist care:eg Acute MI, febrile neutropenia, CVA

·        Social/family circumstances affecting discharge to patients own home.

Investigations carried out in MAU

On arrival in the MAU a detailed history will be taken from the patient.

The Registrar on duty will see the patients within 1 hour of arrival and review the tests carried out. Priority is given depending on the patient’s condition. Following review by the Consultant–on-call, further tests may be requested and a plan agreed for the patient.

If admission is required this will be arranged.

Charges at the MAU.

All patients attending the Medical Assessment Unit will incur a charge of €120. This will include the review by the Consultant–on-duty. Investigations will incur a separate cost up to a maximum of €500 (inc the initial €120)on the day of visit.

Specialist Consultations other than the Consultant-on-duty may incur a separate charge.

If admission is necessary any charges paid that are covered by the patient’s private health insurers will be refunded to the patient.

 Chest Pain Clinic

Investigations carried out in Chest Pain Clinic

On arrival in the clinic, a detailed history will be taken   from the patient.  

An ECG and necessary bloods will be taken.

The patient will be reviewed by the Consultant Cardiologist–on-call, further tests may be requested and a plan agreed for the patient.

If admission is required this will be arranged.

Charges at the Chest Pain Clinic.

All patients attending the Chest Pain Clinic will incur a charge of €350

This will include the standard investigations of ECG, Blood tests, Exercise Stress Test and the Cardiology opinion.

Other outpatient tests must be paid for as necessary to a max of €500 on the day of visit.

Referral to specialist Consultations other than the Cardiologist on duty may incur a separate charge.
