The
hospital originated from the two private nursing homes at
Leeson Street
and Pembroke Street
,
Dublin
operated under the care of the Religious Sisters of Charity. With the
establishment of St. Vincent’s Hospital, at
Elm
Park
the nursing homes were working in isolation from the main hospital and a
decision was made to move into new premises closer to
St. Vincent
’s Hospital. The hospital was completed and opened for patients
on 1st May 1974. The building was entirely financed by the Sisters of
Charity at the time.
The
hospital initially consisted
of 140 beds, mostly four-bedded and five-bedded rooms, and twenty-four
single rooms complete with bathrooms.
A building project completed in the early eighties added another
twenty single rooms, an x-ray department, administration, offices, a
private consultants clinic, physiotherapy and pharmacy.
In
the 1980’s the hospital installed an MRI scanner and developed
comprehensive radiotherapy services in the 1990’s.
It also concentrated on a number of specialities for daycare
patients including oncology, gastroenterology, chest investigations, minor
surgery, urology and gynaecology, among other specialities.
The
hospital developed into a modern acute hospital with 164 inpatient
and 36 day care beds with a wide range of inpatient and out-patient
diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services which complement the
services available from St. Vincent’s
University
Hospital
. The hospital merged with St. Vincent’s
University
Hospital
and St. Michael’s Hospital as part of
St. Vincent
’s Healthcare Group Limited on 1st January 2003.
Construction
of a new Private
Hospital
commenced in March 2008 and is due for completion in November 2010. The
new hospital will include 236 in-patient beds and 52 day care spaces. The
hospital achieved Joint Commission International Accreditation in
September 2009. The hospital operates on a not for profit basis with a
dedicated Management Team and Chief
Executive reporting through the Group CEO to the Board of Directors
